Charles Redd was born in Bluff, Utah, on 8 May 1889, the sixth of eight children of Lemuel Hardison Redd, Jr., and Eliza Ann Westover. Charles, always referred to as "Charlie," spent his childhood and youth in Bluff on the San Juan River in southeastern Utah. He attended Brigham Young University, where he studied agriculture and business and was active in sports, politics, and debate. Platte D. Lyman, a son of Amasa Lyman and Eliza Partridge Lyman, was born on August 20, 1848, in a wagon on the Platte River. He was called by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help Silas S. Smith head the San Juan Mission in 1879, and essentially took over command of the expedition during Smith's prolonged absences.
